Roles - Speaker

Each meeting usually consists of two speakers. As the speaker, it is essential that you are prepared to give a speech from the Toastmaster manuals, either from the Communication and Leadership Program or an Advanced manual.

This is considered a major role and it will not be given to anyone who has been a member less than 4 weeks.

Responsibilities - Prior to the Meeting:

  • Be aware of when you are schedule to speak
  • Give the Toastmaster an introduction, Speech title, time requirement and the manual speech number and title
  • Contact your evaluator and discuss what you want evaluated besides the evaluation form in the manual
  • If needed, contact a member of the club to answer any questions or help support you in any way you need
  • If needed, come early to the meeting to setup the room or equipment. It is important to be ready to speak when you are introduced.

Responsibilities - During the Meeting:

  • Sit near the front of the room
  • Begin your speech by acknowledging the group. Toastmaster uses "Good afternoon fellow Toastmasters and honored guests" (if there are guests in the room).
  • When your speech is finished DO NOT say Thank You. Say "I will turn the meeting over to our Toastmaster at this time." Or some variation of that.
  • During your evaluation, listen carefully to the helpful hints and suggestions that will help you succeed in your next speech.

Responsibilities - After the Meeting:

  • Get your manual from your evaluator.
  • Have the VP of Education initial the Project Completion Record in the back of the manual.

Skills Used:

  • Organization/preparation
  • Creativity
  • Presentation – body language and gestures, facial expression, props (including computers or technology)
  • Vocal
