Lawson Thrill Speakers
President Distinguished (What's this?)
Club 7507, District 6
Roles - Grammarian
The Grammarian is responsible for the Word of the Day and monitoring
the use of the English language. This could include poor uses, great
uses and colorful phrases (incomplete sentences, sentences that change
direction in midstream, incorrect grammar, made up words or grammar).
This is a minor role and may be assigned within 2 weeks of becoming a member.
Responsibilities - Prior to the Meeting:
- Contact the Toastmaster to find out the theme of the meeting
- Find a word that enhances the theme of the day (or not!). Include the definition of the word and a sentence using the word.
- Contact the Toastmaster again to let them know what the Word of the Day is. They will add it to the agenda.
- Print out a display of the word of the day in front and back of the room. Be sure the font size is large enough for everyone to read. Include the definition and use of the word in a sentence. If you need help finding a definition, try http://www.m-w.com
Responsibilities - During the Meeting:
- After you are introduced, explain the role of the Grammarian.
Encourage everyone to use the Word of the Day.
- On a blank piece of paper, take notes on how many times the Word
of the Day was used and by whom. Take notes on all good/poor uses
of language and who used them.
- Note: This role requires you to listen more intently to the words
people are using. You must remove yourself from the content of the
meeting and listen intently.
- When re-introduced by the general evaluator
give your report. Keep within the 2 minutes allotted.
Skills Used:
- Listening
- Good grammar
- Spontaneity - Create a "speech on the fly" with your final report
