Lawson Thrill Speakers
President Distinguished (What's this?)
Club 7507, District 6
Roles - Ah Counter
The purpose of the Ah counter is to count words and sounds used as
crutches or fillers by ANYONE who speaks during the meeting. This is
considered a minor role, but it takes great skill in listening to hear
these words and not to get pulled into the content of what each person
is saying.
Words to watch for:
- And
- So
- But
- Well
- You know, ya know
- Ah
- Um
- Er
- Repeated words or phrases
- Unnatural pauses
This is a minor role and may be assigned within 2 weeks of becoming
a member.
Responsibilities - During the Meeting:
- Collect the Ah Counter slips from the Resource Box (the Sergeant of
Arms is in charge of this box)
- On each slip of paper write the individual’s name (start with each
person who has a role in the meeting and add slips as needed).
- Throughout the meeting, beginning with the presiding officer, keep
track of all the crutch words and fillers spoken by each person
speaking. When you are speaking be sure to have the person next
to you count your ums and ahs!
- Note: This role requires a picky ear! You must remove yourself
from the content of the meeting and listen intently for the
crutch words.
- When re-introduced by the GE, give your report on how we did overall.
If someone has made great improvements report on that. Keep within the
2 minutes allotted.
Responsibilities - After the Meeting:
- Hand out the Ah Counter slips to the individuals
Skills Used:
- Listening
- Did I mention, listening?
- Oh, another thing, listening!
- Spontaneity - Create a "speech on the fly" with your final report
